남편이 한 살이라도 젊을 때 해양 스포츠를 즐겨 보자고 제안했다. 나는 수영도 못하고 물도 엄청 무서워했지만 그냥 남편만 믿고 따라나섰다. 우리가 도착한 곳은 필리핀의 작은 섬 보홀(Bohol)이었다. 필리핀 국민들이 휴양지로 많이 찾는 곳이라고 한다.
첫날은 안전 수칙과 호흡법, 수중 수신호를 배웠다. 그리고 공기탱크를 짊어진 채 강사와 한 조가 되어 바다로 들어갔다. 그런데 수압 때문에 고막이 찢어질 듯 아파 왔다. 귀가 아프다는 수신호를 보내자 강사가 내 코를 힘껏 눌러 주었다. 신기하게도 순식간에 통증이 괜찮아졌다.
그렇게 위기를 두 번 넘기자 긴장됐던 몸이 점점 유연해졌다. 그제야 주위를 유영하는 아름다운 물고기들이 시야에 들어오기 시작했다. 노란색, 핑크색, 보라색 물고기를 마주하니 그야말로 신세계에 들어온 기분이었다. 함께한 강사분 덕분에 나의 첫 스쿠버 다이빙 체험은 아주 성공적이었다.
