저는 정년을 5년 남겨 놓고 열심히 산 나 자신에게 보상으로 5년이라는 시간을 보너스로 주고 싶어 조기 퇴직을 결정했습니다. 그게 어느덧 11년 전입니다. 은퇴를 하자마자 65세가 되면 꼭 해외여행을 자유롭게 해 보자는 장기 계획을 스스로 세웠습니다.
그 즈음 딸의 추천으로 EBS 영어 프로그램을 접했고, 지금까지 계속 듣고 있습니다. 덕분에 저는 산티아고 순례길 800km를 친구 둘과 함께 두 차례나 다녀올 수 있었습니다. 걸으면서 외국인들과 대화도 많이 했습니다. 한 영국인 친구는 "너 지금 나와 대화하고 있잖아. 영어 잘하는 거야." 라는 말까지 해 주었습니다.
당연히 때론 슬럼프에 빠질 때도 있었지만, 영어를 취미 생활이라 여기며 꾸준히 붙잡고 있었습니다. 그중 <입트영>은 많은 분들의 사연을 통해 다양한 삶을 간접 경험하게 해 주고, 늘 동기 부여가 되어 꾸준히 하도록 해 줍니다. 고맙습니다.
