재능은 타고나는 것인지 길러지는 것인지에 대한 의견은 늘 분분하다. 하지만 성향이 전혀 다른 두 아들을 직접 키워 보니, 생각보다 타고나는 것이 더 많다는 것을 깨달았다.
초등학생인 첫째는 뼈대가 가늘고 운동 신경이 거의 없다. 하지만 기계에 능숙하고 작동 원리를 탐구하는 것을 좋아하는 점에서 나를 쏙 빼닮았다. 반면 아직 만 4세인 둘째는 힘이 장사이고 벌써 태권도 발차기가 예사롭지 않다. 게다가 만화 캐릭터를 따라 하는 탁월한 연기력까지 갖춘 걸 보면 남편의 끼를 그대로 물려받았다.
이렇게 서로 다른 재능을 보이는 두 형제를 보면 유전자의 힘이 놀랍기만 하다. 부모로서 나의 역할은 아이들이 각자 타고난 자질과 재능을 잘 꽃피울 수 있도록 도와주는 것이라 생각한다.
